Judith Kay "Katie" Mertens, the daughter of Morris and Elsie (Webb) Anderson, was born on August 18, 1940 at Nelson, Nebraska. She passed away on November 9, 2008 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 68 years.
Judith was united in marriage to Maurice Wilford on May 24, 1958 in Nelson, Nebraska and to this union four children were born, Michael, Christine, Cheryl and Anita. Maurice died on January 25, 1969. She was united in marriage to James Mertens on November 8, 1969 at Superior, Nebraska and to this union 6 children were born, Lyle, Neal, Amy, Glenda, John and Dale. James died on July 15, 2001.
Judith was a former Girl Scout Leader for many years and a Gold Star Sister. She enjoyed quilting , making many quilts for her children and gradnchildren. She loved to read and
share coffee with her friends at the Guide Rock Senior Center. She did a lot of cooking for her boys, spent time camping with her family at the river, she collected teapots and rolling pins and liked to spoil her Dauschaund dogs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Maurice and husband James, a grandson, Robin Simpson, four sisters, Wanda Amack, Donna Madson, Bonnie Adrian, and Marlys Waller and four brothers, Eugene, Morris, Jr., an infant brother, and Jackie.

She is survived by her children Mike Wilford and wife Lisa of Harvard, Nebraska; Christine Straka of Tonah, Wisconsin; Cheryl Klein and husband Randy of Roseland, Nebraska;
Anita Simpson and husband Dean of Guide Rock, Nebraska; Lyle Mertens of Nelson, Nebraska; Neal Mertens of Superior, Nebraska; Amy Mazour and husband Craig of Lawrence, Nebraska;
Glenda Gant and husband Robert of Hastings, Nebraska; John Mertens of Superior, Nebraska and Dale Mertens and wife Jenny of Franklin, Nebraska; 23 grandchildren, Amber Winter, Austin Wilford, Caleb Wilford, Andrew Burbach, Josh Burbach, Caleb Burbach, Madalyn Leichleiter, Eric Wilford, Jessica Johnston, Jeremy Johnston, Shayla Martin, Shelbi Martin, Brooke Martin, Adam Klein, Baili Klein, Randa Klein, Melody Hayes, Mark Simpson, Carlie Mazour, Avery Mazour, Keaton Mazour, Dustin Gant and Candice Gant. 5 Great-Grandchildren, Hailee, Tyler, Zachary, K.C. and Dillon along with nieces, nephews and a host of friends.


Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 10:00 AM from the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Superior, Nebraska with Father Brad Zitek officiating.
Congregation hymns were "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". Special music was "On Eagle's Wings" and "The Lord's Prayer", with Stephanie Thayer as soloist and Betty Schott as organist.
Rosary services were held on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 7:30 PM from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel.
Lector was Arnold Miller, acolyte was Donald Mazour and altar server was Eric Schiermeyer.
Pallbearers were Troy Anderson, Roy Anderson, Roger Amack, Ted Mahood, Terry Walker, Logan Crockett, Terry Madson and Robert Mertens.
Interment was in the Bostwick Cemetery near Superior, Nebraska.
