Mary was 5 ft. 2in. tall, brown eyes and brunette hair, she worked in sales & as a cashier at Cherbusco, she had been a waitress and cook and even ran a restaurant a one time, she was still working part-time at Halls restaurant in 1991, retiring there in 2002. She has fond memories about her birth city Decatur, as a child living there, she use to babysit for (Alice and Sissy, my mom and her sister) and put the phonograph record player on and dance with them, she remembers once she was taking them for a walk in the carriage and it tipped over, luckily they landed on the pillows that were in it, she use to think they were like her dolls. She enjoyed going to her brother and sister-in-laws (Chots & Ruth) house, she was about 11 or 12 and they lived close to each other on Water Street in Decatur.

Her Mom Emma, wanted to call her Mary Helen after her Mother, but her Dad wanted to name her Ruth so they settled on Ruth Helen, Her Mom who was born in 1873, once told her that she had been born in a cabin on the Sangamon River. Helen remembers the time that her Aunt Della who was being courted by Herbert French widowed, after his wife Adelia died. They would take her along for rides in the horse and buggy around town and through the country side. She remembers how Herbert and Della met, it seems Della worked for the Milk Depot on North Morgan Street and Herbert took his milk from his cows there, she also remembers going to Sunday Dinners at Aunt Ann (half sister to her mother) and Uncle Charlie Alderson's house.

Ruth H. Torrence, 98, of Fort Wayne, died Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at her home. Born in Decatur, Illinois, she was a cashier for Halls with 28 years of service, retiring in 2002. She was a member of Parkwood Church of God. Surviving are her daughters, Dee (Rod) Walls of Greenville, South Carolina, and Joan (Farouk) Hamoui of Fort Wayne, son David Torrence of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Gordon, and two sons, Don and Richard Torrence. Service is 1:30 p.m. Monday at Parkwood Church of God, 3320 Trier road, with calling one hour prior. calling also from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 East DuPont Road. Burial in Eel River Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Park Church of God.
