Mary was the daughter of William and Ann Heward Brown. She married Charles F McCumber 1 Jan. 1870. They divorced 1875. Mary remarried to Alfred H Lewis 17 Mar 1877.

The funeral of Mrs. Alfred H. Lewis took place on Friday afternoon. There was prayer at the house at 1:30, the public service at the South Baptist church at 2. Rev. W. D. Bancroft conducted the service, speaking from the text, "But now hath Christ been raised from the dead, the first fruits of them that are asleep"; I Cor. 15:20. Mrs. Lewis has been a member of the South Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. C. H. LeVitt and E.J. Watkins sang. The following served as bearers; Chas. Henry, Martin Neff, John Force, Joseph Witter, George Comstock and Chas. Helligas. Burial was made in the Belvidere cemetery. The deep sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved ones.
Mary Brown Lewis was born in Battenberg, Lancaster, England, April 5, 1852, and passed away in Belvidere, Ill., May 29, 1912. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Brown. She came with her parents to the United States in 1855 and settled in Boone county. She was married at Beloit in 1870 to Chas. McCumber. To this union was born one daughter, Mrytie, who died five years age.
She was married on March 17, 1877 in Belvidere to Alfred Henry Lewis, who survives. To this union was born five children, Frankie and Lucy, who died in infancy, Charles Henry Lewis of North Dakota, Alvin Thomas Lewis and Iva Mae Lewis, both of Belvidere. Besides the immediate family there are two grand-children. Mrs. William Hazelwood and Mrs. Frank are sisters of the deceased.
