Served in the U.S. Army and received a commission as a First Lieutenant of the infantry. He began serving in the 9th Company 157th Depot Brigade from April to October 1918, in the 25th Company COTS from October 1918 to January 1919, and Company B Dev. Bn. #1 from January to March 1919, then served overseas in A E F Siberia, Russian Railway Service Corps, until August 1920.

Stanley was the seventh of nine children. He was baptized by by Rev. R. W. Wilson on March 14, 1897 at Nanticoke, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. On September 17, 1921, he married Mary Agnes McGranaghan in Eagles Mere, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Walter Traub. He worked for the American Car and Foundry Company in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania as a car inspector.
