Albert was the oldest of nine children, and was born in Dorrance Corners. On September 18, 1900, he married Harriet Mensch at Mifflinville, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. The ceremony was performed by D. S. Brown, Justice of the Peace. The couple had ten children: Raymond, Gordon, Herbert, Albert Clarence, Stanley, Russell, Gladys, twins Melva Ellsworth and Melvin Elwood, and Albert James.

Early in his career, he worked as a laborer in the coal mines. Later, he was employed at the American Car and Foundry in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, as a rivet bucker at the steel plant.
