OBITUARY, The Sioux Valley News, 6 October 1898, page 1: Alney N. Moon passed away on the evening of Thursday, September 29, 1898, surrounded by his wife, children, relatives and friends. He was born near South Adams, Massachusetts, on October 2, 1824, being at the time of his death the age of 73 years, 11 months and 27 days. When a small boy he removed with his parents to the state of New York where he lived until the early fifties. He then came to Iowa and settled in Hardin County. Here he was united in marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Potts on October 13, 1865, and to them were born six children, two boys and four girls, namely - Mrs. Rosene Cobb of Lynch, Nebraska, Mrs. Lillie Brooks of Rowen, Iowa, Mrs. Roxana Miller, William A. Moon, John M. Moon, all of Correctionville. In September 1867 he removed to Ida County and settled on what is known as the old Cobb homestead, where they lived nine years when he moved onto the farm in Woodbury County, which has since gone by his name. He had lived on this place only a short time when he lost his first wife on May 17, 1878. On this place he remained until last March when he removed to his late residence northeast of town. On November 28, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Matilda Hobbs. There were born to them also six children, two boys and four girls, viz - Mrs. Elizabeth Sellman, Miss Aurilla, Herbert L., Albert, Minnie M., and Elsie M., all of Correctionville. All the children of both marriages survive him and were present at the funeral. Mr. Moon, as will be seen by the above obituary, was one of the early settlers of the country. His neighbors speak of him as a man of strong and ready friendship, ready and willing to assist them in times of need. He was taken ill suddenly Saturday, September 17, while on his way home from town and from the first no hopes were given by the attending physician that he could recover. The funeral was held at the Methodist Church, the sermon delivered by Rev. W.M. Force, assisted in the services by Rev. T.S. Cole. The remains were interred in the city cemetery and were followed to the grave by a large procession.
