Wichita Pioneer Dies at Age 80

Elizabeth Tatman Writer, 'Old Settler'

Mrs. Elizabeth Tatman, a pioneer Wichita resident who observed her 80th birthday Wednesday; died Thursday in a convalescent home at 314 N. Clifton after an extended illness.

Born Dec. 26, 1876, at Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Tatman came to Wichita with her parents in 1885. She received her education in Wichita schools, and later was a principal speaker when Irving Elementary School was dedicated about 12 years ago.

Mrs. Tatman wrote numerous articles about early-day Wichita for Wichita newspapers, and she attended Sunday School at St. Paul's Methodist Church when it was a mission of First Methodist Church. In those days the congregation assembled in a frame building at the corner of 13th and Waco. Present site of St. Paul's Methodist Church is 13th and Broadway.

On Aug. 18, 1896, she was married to Wilbert Tatman, a pioneer grocer, in Wichita. They purchased the former location of St. Paul's Methodist Church at 13th and Waco where they operated a grocery store for several years, Mr. Tatman died March 3, 1942.

Mrs. Tatman was an active member of St. Paul's Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Old Settlers Club.
Survivors include a son, W. C., 805 Porter, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Cochran Mortuary with the Rev. Joseph Ploughe, pastor of St. Paul's Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
