A J Harrington, Educator, Dies

Andrew Jackson (A J) Harrington, 71 year old retired educator, who died at the Houston Hospital about 6:10 pm, Wednesday, Oct. 14, were laid to rest Friday in the Houston Cemetery.

Services for the former Chickasaw county Superintendent of Education, who served in that capacity from 1948-1952, were conducted from the Houston First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Atkins and the Rev. Gene Russell officiating. Houston Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Active pallbearers were Weldon Harrington, Paul Stovall, Gene Harrington, Durell Gann, Paul Dendy and Tommy Harrington.

Mr. Harrington was born Jan 28 1893, the son of the late Andrew Jackson Harrington, and Flora McElreath Harrington. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.

He resided on Houston Route 1.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Cleo Eubank Harrington of Houston, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Aubrey Cliett of Montpelier; a brother, A D Harrington of Houston and three grandchildren.

He was a mason and a World War II veteran.

Extensive Education

Mr. Harrington was graduated from Mississippi college at Clinton and did graduate work at Mississippi State university and Peabody College at Nashville.

He began his teaching career at Woodland in 1920, serving as superintendent. From there he went to Newton, where he coached and taught math. Then he moved to Grenada where he also taught math and coached. The he ran for county superintendent of Chickasaw County and was defeated.

In 1926 he went to Montpelier as superintendent and served Montpelier in that capacity until 1940. During his tenure at Montpelier the school built a new gym and high school building and became a consolidated school. Prior to that, it had been a two year high school. It was while he was at Montpelier that he met the former Miss Cleo Eubanks, who came there to teach. They were married in 1940.

During World War II, he taught school at Slate Springs, and for six years, from 1952 until 1958, he taught math and served as principal at Houlka High School.

Mr. Harrington served the Chickasaw Cooperative, AAL, in Houston since it was organized here in 1945.
