Served in the U.S. Army Air Corps

Walter was the fifth of twelve children. In 1932 he graduated from Shickshinny High School, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was stationed at a Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Washington, DC in 1935.

In January 1941 he married Evelyn Schmidtman, and they raised one son and one daughter. He worked at the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, and retired in 1970.
