Mrs. Saranda J. Grote, wife of C. A. Grote, Manheim Township, was born September 21, 1858, and died November 9, 1935, aged 77 years, 1 month, and 18 days.
Her sudden and unexpected death came as a great shock to the entire community. Mrs. Grote had a host of friends who loved and honored her for her fine disposition. She was a faithful wife, the mother of a large family, and always a helpful and hospitable neighbor and friend.
She was a devoted member of St. Jacob's (Stone) Reformed Church for 63 years. She was confirmed by the Rev. J. D. Zehring in 1872. In 1876 she was married to C. A. Grote. Her pastors found in Mrs. Grote a loyal friend, and she welcomed them into her home with sincere expressions of joy. Her children rise up to call her blessed.
The funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, November 13, 1935, with brief services at the house, and the final services at the Stone Church and burial in the new cemetery. In spite of the very inclement weather a congregation of 1000 were present at the services. Her pastor was assisted in the services by Revs. W. H. Ehrhart and Kenneth S. Ehrhart. The funeral text was II Tim. 4:7.
