The Douglas County Herald (Ava, Missouri) Thu, Jun 10, 1937
Fatal injuries were received Sunday afternoon by Oden Sanders, 24, under the dual wheel of a dump truck loaded with sand.
Sanders, with three companions, Harry Gentry, driver, and Glyn Irby and Johnny Woolman, had loaded the truck with sand a couple of miles above the highway 14 bridge on Bryant creek, and were returning down the narrow road along the creek bank when the accident occurred.
Sanders and Irby were seated on top of the cab of the truck with their feet on the load of sand. The truck hit an uneven place in the road and Sanders lost his balance.
As he fell he clasped his arms around Irby's neck, pulling him off the truck with him. Sanders rolled under the truck's rear wheel which passed over his right leg, his abdomen and his left arm. His leg was broken in two or three places and his arm was broken. Irby sustained a cut on the scalp where his heard struck the ground. The wheel grazed his side.
Irby had to unclasp Sanders' arms from his neck before he could get up after the accident, he said.
Sanders was brought to Ava by J. R. Spurlock, who was fishing on the creek nearby, accompanied by Gentry and Woolman. Sanders died in the office of a local physician half an hour later. Irby was able to drive the truck into town.
The truck was going very slow, Gentry said. He estimated the speed at about five miles an hour.
Funeral services for Sanders were conducted Monday afternoon at the Mt. Taber cemetery with the Rev. John Silvey officiating. Burial was under direction of the Clinkingbeard Undertaking company.
Sanders is survived by his wife and two children, and by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sanders, five brothers and five sisters.
He was born near Ava May 10, 1013.
