Elsie Schmitt, 81, Watford City, N.D., formerly of Hurdsfield, N.D., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Watford City.

Elsie Marie Weippert was born Feb. 15, 1928, in Chaseley, N.D., the daughter of Peter and Magdalene (Aichele) Weippert. She grew up at Chaseley and attended Chaseley Public School. She married John Schmitt on Feb. 22, 1946, in Fessenden, N.D. They lived and farmed near Chaseley and in 1973 they moved to a farm near Hurdsfield. He died Nov. 22, 2002. She moved to Watford City in 2006. She transported students to school. She was employed at the Fourth Corporation, Fessenden. She was a member of Chaseley United Methodist Church and its women's group and of the American Legion Auxiliary, Hurdsfield. She was an advocate for the developmentally disabled and was involved in legislation and public awareness in promoting educational and other opportunities. She enjoyed reading and the outdoors.

She is survived by six sons, John (Connie), Grand Junction, Colo., Jeff (Jolene), Buena Vista, Colo., Jarred (Tina), Martin, N.D., Joel (Sherry), Bismarck, N.D., Jason, Stacy, Minn., and Justin, Carrington, N.D.; three daughters, Judy (Konell) Rhone, Watford City, Janet (Jim) Martin, Wimbledon, N.D., and Jennifer (David) Heindinger, Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters, Inez Stegal, Hermiston, Ore., and Martha Schubert, Stockton, Calif.; 27 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-granchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Joy Schmitt; her parents; three brothers, Reuben, Reinhold and Edwin; and a great-grandson, Owen.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, United Methodist Church, Chaseley.
Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, N.D.
Burial: Chaseley City Cemetery, Chaseley.
