Services Held For Gonzales Oldest Resident
Funeral services were held Saturday for Gonzales county's oldest living resident, Mrs. Mandy Henry, 102, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist church. The Rev. S. L. Williams officiated and interment was in the Mt. Zion cemetery in Harwood.
Mrs. Henry celebrated her 100th birthday August 9, 1972 and the Inquirer carried a story at time. She was born in 1872 in Lockhart and moved to Gonzales county when she was 25.
Mrs. Henry is survived by three daughters, Mary Henry of Gonzales; Mrs. Lillie Kennon of Abilene and Mrs. Odessa Norwood of Waco, and two sons, Vernis Henry of Harwood and Plymouth Henry of San Antonio. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Henry was preceded in death by her husband, Mack, in 1857 and three sons. She and her husband lived in the Thompsonville Community for many years on the J. P. Bouldin farm and on their own farm.
Up until she became too ill Mrs. Henry went regularly to the Mt. Pilgrim church. At age 102 she was still attending church. She joined the Baptist church at an early age.
When interviewed in 1972, Mrs . Henry said the secret to a long life was simple, "Trust in God."
