Herman William Elting was born to Carl Elting and Kristina Elting nee Schardt on Sept. 20, 1886, south of Carleton. He departed this life on Oct. 14, 1965, at the age of 79 years and 24 days.

He was baptized in the Christian faith on Sept. 26, 1886, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Friedensau with the Rev. R.H. Biedermann officiating. He was confirmed in the same church on Mar. 31, 1901, by the Rev. H. Schabacker.

He entered the holy estate of matrimony on Oct. 26, 1909, with Bertha Werner, the Rev. H. Schabacker performing the ceremony. This union was blessed with six children. He lived most of his life in the Friedensau area. The immediate survivors are the following:

His wife, Bertha, of Carleton; three sons, Eric Elting, at home, Arthur Elting and wife and children of Ukiah CA and Roy Elting and wife and children of Herrin IL; three daughters, Ida, Mrs. Harold Trui and husband and children of Ava IL, and Velma, Mrs. Roy Woodall and husband and children of Ukiah CA.

Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Adolph Vortman and Mrs. William Gerberding, of Deshler; 15 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Henry Elting, his brother, preceded him in death Sept. 2, 1965.

The funeral service was conducted Sunday afternoon from Trinity Lutheran Church, Friedensau, with Pastor John D. Kovac officiating. His sermon theme was "Why Christians Can Be Sure of Salvation." His text was Eph. 2:8-9. The congregation sang "Who Knows When Death May Overtake Me and "Oh, How Blest Are Ye Whose Toils Are Ended." The Male Choir sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus."

Interment was made in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Friedensau, with the following serving as pallbearers: Arnold Aufderheide, Leonard Schardt, Reuben Neuhart, Gerald Vortman, Eugene Schardt, Dwayne Elting.
