MARTIN VANDEVEN

A wave of genuine sorrow spread over our community Wednesday afternoon when it became known that Martin Vandeven had departed this life. Mr. Vandeven had been in poor health for some time. On Wednesday, August 4th, the final summons came.

Mr. Vandeven was born in Holland and while still a young lad came with his father and several brothers and sisters to this country where he followed the vocation of farming. Mr. Vandeven at the time of his death was 77 years old. He spent his entire life in this county in this vicinity. February 13, he was married to Mary Hinkebein who died May 25, 1890. To this union eight children, three sons and five daughters were born. Two children, one son, Herman; and one girl, Minnie, preceded their father in death. He was active in church work, being one of the trustees of St. John's Church at Leopold. He was, also, a member of the married men's Sodality.

Funeral services were conducted Friday morning at St. John's Church. Rev. Father Kurtenbach officiating. Interment was at St. John's Cemetery. Those left to cherish his memory are two sons, George of Leopold and Jacob of St. Louis; four daughters, Sr. M. Mathilda of Chinchuba, La.; and Sr. M. Martinella of St. Louis. Both belong to the religious order of Notre Dame. Mrs. Jacob Elfrink of Leopold, Mrs. William Lorson of Staunton, Ill., one brother, William of Lima, Ohio and 23 grandchildren.
