Valentine Shaffer / Schaefer was born in Lower Milford Twp., Northampton (now Lehigh) Co., PA.

He was the son of Johann Martin Schaefer and Elisabeth Catharina Lautenschlaeger.

He married Catherine Staub in Sep 1787 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran (Blue) Church in Upper Saucon Twp., Northampton (now Lehigh) Co., PA.

"... Valentine Schaffer (b. 12-31-1765 d. 12-1-1852) was the seventh child of Martin, and my great ancestor. He was a Tailor by trade, often having to move to find work. In 1787 he married Catherine Staub (d. 1842). They had five sons and five daughters. In 1805, Valentine moved his family to Leck Kill. Then in 1837 at age 71, he and his wife moved to Ringgold Twp., Jefferson County. He bought a 50 acre farm and lived there till he died. ..."

Valentine Shaffer aka "Phelda" in the Commemorative Biographical Records on page 1303. as the great-grand-father of Solomon W. Shaffer.
I also have a daughter Mary Ann Shaffer "Polly" b. 1806 born at Lower Milford Twp., Lehigh Co., She is found in the Census records of 1840, 1850,1860, & 1870 as living with Michael & Mary Shaffer, Ringgold Twp. Pa. Polly is also listed as the dau. of Valentine Shaffer's Will in the Jefferson County Courthouse, Brookville, PA. Death certificate of Valentine Shaffer, list Polly as a dau.

Summary on Peter Shaffer: Peter bought property in Augusta Twp. , Northumberland Co., PA. after his marriage on Feb. 15, 1818 to Mary Magadalene BRAUN He later sold it to his father, Valentin, on Jan 18, 1823. About 1830, he moved to Bedford Co. Pa. with his family. He prospected in Bedford Co. and was unable to provide for his family. The authorities took the family back to Northumberland Co., where Mrs. Shaffer's father Michael Braun lived and they were taken care of there. Peter came back to his family at Leck Hill, but started out again to make his fortune. Magdalena saw his last on Sept. 10, 1837. he died Jan 13, 1850 in a poor house. [information provided by Wm. Elizabeth was born April 3, 1800 in Lower Milford Twp. Lehigh Co., Pa. The Death records & Will of Valentine Shaffer in the Jefferson Co. Courthouse, Brookville, Pa. lists her as the dau. of Valentine Shaffer.
Elizabeth Shaffer married Daniel Hinderliter abt. 1820.
The Howerter Church records, Upper Mahanoy Twp ., Northumberland Co. shows her as mother of 8 children christened there. Records of St. James Lutheran Church, Ringgold, Pa. lists her as mother of Sarah Hinderliter born June 23, 1849.
Death records of St. James Lutheran Church states that Elizabeth died March 4, 1886, she is buried in the St. James Cem. Valentine and Catherine STAUB SHAFFER had a total of 10 children, all their children were christened in the Blue Church, Upper Saucon Twp. Lehigh Co., Pa.
