John "Ehden" Saathoff was born the third child of six children to John Johnson Saathoff and Mary Christina Juhl Saathoff on June 15, 1901, at Valparaiso, Nebraska. He departed this life March 25, 1997, at the St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney, Nebraska. His age was 96 years.

In 1908, the John Saathoffs purchased the Moore farm with its brick house, two miles west of Miller, Nebraska, on the edge of Dawson County, and the family moved from Valparaiso to the farm when Ehden was seven years old. He would live there for the next 81 years. Ehden and his siblings attended Trapper's Grove Rural School District #14 and finished his education at the Miller High School, having completed the 10th grade in 1919, which was the highest grade offered at that time.

In his youth, Ehden attended the Christian church in Miller with his family, where he was baptized and became a member.

On June 18, 1925, Ehden was united in marriage to Bernice Fern Summerville, daughter of Roger Thomas Summerville and Bettie Louise Eloe Summerville, at the county judge's office in Kearney, Nebraska. To this union, three daughters were born, Betty Louise, Arlys Marie, and Dorothy Vaughn. Ehden farmed, raised livestock including cattle, marketing them in Omaha and Kansas City and shipping them by rail for many years. He also sold Funks "G" Hybrid seed corn. Bernice and Ehden were active in exhibiting fruits, vegetables, and flowers at the county fair and were active in many community organizations until their health no longer permitted. Ehden was a member of the Miller Christian Church, a former member of the Miller Senior Citizens Center, the Community Concert Association, and the Miller Alumni Association. Ehden and Bernice celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1957, their 60th anniversary in 1985, and were married for a total of 64 years.

On February 1, 1989, Ehden and Bernice moved to 801 West 11th Street in Kearney, Nebraska. Bernice preceded Ehden in death on September 12, 1989, in Kearney. Ehden moved to the Cambridge Court Retirement Center in Kearney, in October of 1992. Following cancer surgery, Ehden entered the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma, Nebraska, on May 8, 1993, where he resided until September of that same year. He then moved to the St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney in December of 1993, where he lived until his death.

In addition to his wife, Ehden was preceded in death by both parents in 1954; two brothers, Andrew "Edward" and Herbert Saathoff; a sister, Mary Lou Kearney; and three brothers-in-law, Perry "Bill" Davis, Marshall Kearney, and Ralph Baker.

Ehden leave to mourn his passing three daughters, Betty Henning and husband Harvey, Arlys Torrey and husband Lewis, all of Kearney, and Dorothy Cherry and husband Jack of Sioux City, Iowa; two sisters, Tillie Davis of Perry, Iowa, and Anna Baker of Lincoln, Nebraska; fourteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.
