Mr. J. Bryson Hickman, age 71, of Wilmington, died Friday afternoon in Cape Fear Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Hickman was born in Brunswick County on May 24, 1910 and was the son of the late George Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Robbins Hickman. He was retired from Babcock and Wilcox Company following 23 years of service. Mr. Hickman was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church where he had served as the Choir Director for over forty years.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alma Lesh Hickman of the home; four sons, Louis Hickman of Monroe, N.C., William Hickman of Harrisburg, N.C., Jacob Hickman of Concord, N.C., and Thomas Hickman of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Glenwood (Myrtise) McDowell of Wilmington, Mrs. Julia Hickman Grossi of Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Jackie (Delorise) Garland of Greensboro, N.C. and Mrs. T.T. (Ruth) Harrison of Wilmington; a brother, George Rotha Hickman of Winnabow, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Beulah Willetts of Bolivia and Mrs. Margie Willetts also of Bolivia; twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy C. Cable and the Rev. Truett Rogers officiating. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be the grandsons of Mr. Hickman.
Honorary casketbearers will be Dr. Dale Caughey, Jim Henry Williams, Deacons of the church and the members of the Adult Bible Class.
Visitations may be made at Coble's Oleander Chapel until 12:30 p.m. on Sunday at which time Mr. Hickman will be taken to the church to lie in state for one hour prior to the service.
