Motor Machinist Mate Hardegree was Killed in Action, with all shipmates, on May 4, 1945, while serving aboard the submarine, USS Lagarto (SS-371), during an attack on a Japanese convoy in the Gulf of Siam by the Imperial Japanese Navy Minelayer, Hatsutaka.

Navy Records also list his date of birth as March 26, 1916.
