Obituary—Brodrick
Services for Pioneer Woman were Held
at Christian Church Wednesday
Samantha Jane McLaughlin was born to James and Elmira McLaughlin at Chillicothe, Ohio, January 11, 1861, and passed away at her home in Fredonia, February 23, 1930, at the age of 69 years, 1 month and 12 days.
She moved with her parents to Kansas when she was 10 years old and settled about 7 ½ miles southwest of Fall River. She was married on July 4, 1878, to I. W. Brodrick and they later purchased the old McLaughlin homestead and lived there until 1901, whey they moved to Fall River, moving from there to Fredonia in 1922.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Brodrick: Arthur Martin, deceased; Walter Lee of Fredonia; Lillie Ann Wade of Fairfield, Mont.; Gertie May, deceased; Lester Edward of San Francisco, Calif.; and Myrtle Effie Fulghum of Altoona. Mr. Brodrick died November 15, 1925.
Besides her children Mrs. Brodrick leaves four grandsons: A. Lee Brodrick of Fall River, Dale Wade and Brice and Donald Lee Fulghum; one brother, Ed McLaughlin of Centralia, Wash.; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Ungry of Emerson, Iowa, who has been with her during her last illness; other relatives and many friends.
Since 1901 she has been a member of the Rebekah lodge, uniting with the order at Fall River and later transferring her membership to Fredonia.
At the age of 24 years she accepted Christ as her Savior and became a member of the Christian church. Her daily life bespoke the sincerity of her faith. She was an ideal mother, kind to all who came her way, and a good neighbor. As long as her health permitted, she was always in her place at all church services. She was tireless in her efforts in the Cherrful Workers class and in all branches of church work. She was quiet and reserved in manner, but possessed a personality that radiated friendliness, lending courage, promoting Christian fellowship and inspiring goodness. To know Mother Brodrick was a privilege that will live long in the memory of her friends, serving in many ways as a guidance in life and an incentive toward spiritual benefit.
Funeral services, conducted by the pastor C. O. Wilson, were held at the Christian church Wednesday afternoon, February 26, and burial was made in Fredonia cemetery.
7 children: Lee (1903)
