Franklin Garlaugh (may have been spelled "Gerlaugh"), was from Freedom, Wisconsin. He and William P. Black both enlisted and were with the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. They were lifelong friends and shared the same birthdate. The Sixth was one of the units of the North that entered the battle at Sharpsburg, Maryland early on September 17th, 1862. As the Sixth fought, the Confederate artillery and gunfire battered the unit heavily. Garlaugh was killed, being shot in the head, aged 19 years, 5 months and 21 days. He is buried next to William P. Black in the Wisconsin section of Antietam National Cemetery.
