William Henry Clay Crum was the son of Anderson Pigg Crum and Letitia Akers, natives of Virginia. His parents married in 1834 in Patrick County, Virginia and moved soon after to farm in Moniteau County, Missouri. William was the oldest of eight children: William Henry Clay Crum, Nathaniel Anderson Crum, James Wesley Crum, a daughter d.y. in 1839, George Washington Crum, Amanda Jane (Crum) Akers, Mary Elizabeth (Crum) Howard and a son who d.y. in 1844. All were born in Moniteau County, Missouri, or what was then Cole County.

On February 18, 1864 in Moniteau County, Missouri, William Henry Clay Crum married Cynthia Welch, a native of Missouri. They were the parents of Letitia, Missouri, Charles Gordon, Samuel David, Henry and Gertrude (Crum) Callahan, born in Moniteau County. When a young man, William taught school. He farmed in Linn Township of Moniteau County for over fifty years. Still farming in 1920 at the age of eighty-four years, he died the following year at the age of eighty-five.
