ANDERSON — Charles Adrian Allen, 89, died July 9, 2009, at Community Hospital Anderson.

He was born Oct. 31, 1919, in Ripley County, Mo., the son of Edward and Mary Lee Allen.

Charles graduated from Doniphan High School in May of 1940 and joined the U.S. Coast Guard that September. He was stationed in the Great Lakes and took part in the North African Invasion in 1942, the Atlantic-Pacific Theatre in 1943, and again in 1945-46. He was honorably discharged in May 1946.

He married Mary Lawhon on Dec. 20, 1940, in Doniphan, Mo. She preceded him in death on June 24, 1983. In 1950, he moved with his family to Anderson, where he attended Anderson College, from 1951 to 1956, and received a bachelor's degree, with a major in Bible and minor in psychology. From 1956 to 1962, he attended Ball State Teachers College and there received his master's degree in education, with a major in guidance counseling and school administration. During those years, he was also employed at Delco Remy Div. of General Motors.

For 27 years, from 1958 to 1984, Charles was employed as a teacher, counselor and supervisor by the Education Department of the Indiana Reformatory in Pendleton. He was a behavioral therapist and had great compassion for people who were hurting.

On Jan. 1, 1984, he married Alica Lela Blackwelder, who survives him. They resided in Muncie from 1984 to 2001, then moved to Anderson.

In 1980, he was recognized by Gov. Otis Bowen for his 22 years of unselfish contributions and dedicated service to the Indiana Reformatory and, in 1985, he was commissioned by Gov. Robert Orr as a Distinguished Hoosier.

Charles attended North Anderson Church of God and, more recently, East Side Church of God, where he was active as an usher and with the Lamplighters' Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Indiana State Retired Teachers' Association and East Side Community Club.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Lela (Blackwelder) Allen of Anderson; four children, Janice Parker of Selma, Linda (husband, Steven) Reinhardt of Bigfork, Mont., Connie (husband, Richard) Warner of Anderson and Mary Lynn (husband, Steven) Bare of Charleston, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Toni (husband, Michael) Smith of Muncie and Michael (wife, Debbie) Parker, of Noblesville, Mary (husband, Nathan) Nixon of Selma, Norman Reinhardt of Bigfork, Mont., Bradley Hall of Indianapolis, Melissa Hall of Anderson, Sara Bare and Matthew (wife, Christina) Bare, all of Charleston, S.C.; three stepchildren, Charles (wife, Lynda) Blackwelder of Carmel, Dorothea (husband, James) Flanagan of San Antonio, Texas, and Rhoda (husband, David) Brown of Avon; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are siblings, Anna Adams, George Allen, Bertha Friar, James Allen and Grace Headley, all of Missouri.

In addition to his first wife and his parents, Charles was preceded in death by two brothers, William Allen and Lawrence Allen; a sister, Etta Rainbolt; a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Hall; great-great-grandchild, Parker Joseph Brown; and granddaughter, Blair Brown.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Home, 229 S. Rangeline Road, Anderson, officiated by the Rev. Dwight Dye and Mary Ann Randolph. Burial will take place at East Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson.Visitation hours will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
