Susannah Carmean, daughter of Noah & Pleasant Carmean, was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, on February 22, 1845, and departed this life at Minneola, Kansas, as 3:45 a.m. October 22, 1938, at the age of 93 years and 8 months.She moved with her parents to Macon County, Illinois where she was united in marriage to Z.T. Cornell on July 3, 1864. To this union twelve children were born, three of whom preceded her in death, Pleasant, W.T., & Winnie. She & her husband moved to Clark County, Iowa in 1880 where Mr. Cornell died on December 24, 1889. She then moved to Missouri with her children where she engaged in farming. In 1898 she moved to Kansas & was married to Karl Kassman, residing on a farm ten miles south of Minneola. Mr. Kassman died on October 17, 1913, and Mrs. Kassman moved to Minneola in 1915 living here for three years. On April 10, 1918, she was married to John Jewell and they moved to Pueblo, Colorado which was their home until 1931 when because of Mr. Jewell's health they moved to Missouri. Mr. Jewell died on March 4, 1931 and in 1932 Mrs. Jewell returned to Minneola to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Edith Lanam. Since her return to Minneola she has been in poor health being bedfast most of the time. She united with the Methodist Church at the age of eighteen & has endeavored to live a consistent Christian life, studying her Bible & urging her family to follow her faith. She was the last of the family to be called, all her brothers & sisters having preceded her in death. She is survived by her nine children, Rufus Cornell, Nyssa, Oregon; Mrs. Nina Riley, Pueblo, Colorado: Mrs. Ella Cavanaugh, Dalhart, Texas; A.F. Cornell, Garden Grove, Iowa; Mrs. Eliza Spridgen, Woodburn, Iowa; Theodore Cornell, Woodburn, Iowa; Mrs. Minnie Miller, Chanute, Kansas; Mrs. Phurby Inlow and Mrs. Edith Lanam of Minneola, Kansas, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other relatives.
