Son of Howard O. Shirley and Docia Caroline Twitty. Paternal grandson of Buril Benjamin Shirley and his wife, Euline E. Maternal grandson of Oren C. Twitty and Narcissa Caroline Horton.

Beloved husband of Janice Sue Hasty.

Bert was an avid fisherman and he loved dancing and NASCAR auto racing. He met his wife in 1948-49, when he moved across the street from her parents' home.

Before their meeting, he had proudly served in the US Army during World War II, where he was captured and held as a POW for a year and thirteen days.

He didn't talk much about his war service, but he did express a desire to return to Germany because he thought it was a beautiful country. He was a retired painting contractor, and a member of Hermitage Baptist Church.

He and Janice married in the Camden Court House in 1951, in a ceremony witnessed by both their mothers. They were a devoted couple for fifty-seven years.

Bert was survived by his wife; two sons, Tim and Keith Shirley; three grandsons; one granddaughter; a great grandson; two brothers, James and Leavy Shirley; and a host of nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Barniest Shirley and Forrest Shirley; sisters, Eva Sheheen, Sudie Caulder and Annalee Crolley.
