Son of William Freyenhagen and Mary Whealey (1791-1858), who are also buried in this cemetery, John was granted letters of administration for the estate of his maternal aunt Ann Whealey (c. 1793-1870) in 1870). The final accounting of Ann's estate lists as other heirs John's siblings (Richard, Charles and Catharine Oldrin), other maternal aunts, Lydia Bedell (1804-1885) and Harriet Whealey, and uncle Daniel Whealey (1798-1880), and a maternal cousin (Deborah Leavens).

John married Drusilla with whom he had the following:

Mary (1853-1887)
Jessie (1859-1939) m John Van Dine
