She lived with her Grandma and Grandpa Hammersma, in Amsterdam. She attended grade school in Amsterdam and graduated from Manhattan High School.
She married Clement M. Simmons on Aug. 8, 1942, and he preceded her in death in 1958. Following her husband's death, she worked as a clerk at Robins and Gust Department Store in Manhattan until she met Cecil G. Metcalf. They were married June 10, 1974, and moved to Polson. The couple moved back to Manhattan where Bertha helped Cecil make and finish furniture. Cecil preceded her in death in June 1996.
Bertha was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 28 years. She was a past officer, and it was a job she dearly loved. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and quilting. She made quilts for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lucille and John Cline of Carlsbad, Calif., daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mel McKitrick of Ennis; four grandsons and seven great-grandchildren, Madyson and Braydon; Norm and Tina McKitrick of Elko, Nev., and their children, Jordan and Taylor; Brian and Wendy McKitrick of McAllister and their children, Blake, Walker and Gavin; sister, Judy Raser of Stevensville, Margaret Campbell of Manhattan, Helen Holderby of Walla Walla, Wash., and Betty Julian of Manhattan; and brother, Barney Verwolf of Stevensville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
