Charles was the youngest of five children of Gustav Charles and Maria Anna (Shimmer) Hanneman.

He grew up on the east side of Detroit, MI as did his father.

On 19 Oct 1929 in St Joseph's Parish in Detroit Charles married Lorraine C. Brobecker. She was one of six children of Louis & Gertrude (Theobald) Broebecker.

The couple had two children, Lois (Belcher) and James C.

In 1940 Charles worked as an accountant for GM. After the war ended, in 1946 he was transferred to the GM Ternstedt plant located in Ohio. Regretfully the move broke the contact with some of the Detroit Hannemans.
