Gustav Hanneman was the son of John & Anna Katherine (Stellmacher) Hanneman. He was born in Danzig, Prussia, (present day Gdansk, Poland).

The German family was Roman Catholic. See the image (German script) of Gustav's 1860 baptism record from Saint Nicolai Parish in Danzig, West Prussia.

He was christened as Gustav Carl Hannemann. Before leaving Danzig in 1869 all of the Church records showed the family spelled Hanneman with two nn(s) at the end Hannemann. Only one n was used by the family after arriving in America.

Ship papers for the S.S. America shows that when Gustav was 8 he and his parents left their native Danzig for America.

From 1869 on Gustav and the immediate family lived on the East side of Detroit.

Of his 11 siblings only 3 lived to be adults, (Helen, Theresa & John). In America Charles was often used as a middle name in his family. In Prussia it was Carl.

Gustav married Maria Anna Schimmer 3 Sep 1895.

The couple had 5 children, Christian, Othilia, William, Evelyn & Charles.

Gustav loved to sail boats on the Detroit River and he was a good swimmer. He supported his family by working as a cornicemaker, plumber, tinner and sheet metal worker.

Regretfully Gustav died as a result of injuries 6 months after from falling off a roof.
