William Spurgeon Smith, 91, of New Bethlehem RD 1 died Sunday in his home.
Born June 10, 1897, in Charleston (now McWilliams) Armstrong County, he was a son of Alvy Clarence Smith and Mary Catherine Neese Smith.
Mr. Smith was a coal miner and farmer. He attended the Mudlic United Methodist Church.
He was married to the former Lula Idella Sherry, who preceded him in death on February 7, 1985.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Catherine Smith of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Harry (Betty) Nolf of Duncannon and Mrs. Edgar (Dorothy) Kunselman of New Bethlehem RD 2; three sons, William Clarence Smith of New Bethlehem RD 3, Harry Gene Smith of Fairmount City RD 1 and John Earl Smith of New Bethlehem RD 1; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Snyder Myers of Kittanning; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death in addition to his wife and parents were a son, Leo Smith; a brother, Ira Russell Smith; six sisters, Flora, Elsie and Snowie Smith, Edna Kemp, Olive Harmon and Martha Doverspike Caruso; and two grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 9 pm today in the Mateer Funeral Home in New Bethlehem. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Tuesday in the funeral home with Rev. Joan Phillips officiating.
Interment will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery.
