James William "Willie" Haislip
H/o (1) Olga L Haislip and (2) Nannie Belle Dale
Son of Green Travis Haislip & Louisa A Couser Haislip

James William Haislip, son of Green Travis Haislip and Louisa Ann Couser, married a distant cousin, Olga Haislip. They had one son, Green Cleburne (G.C.), in 1916, and Olga died in 1917. In October 1921 Willie married Nannie Bell Dale, daughter of David Wilson Dale and Ida Bell Woodard.

Their home was located a few hundred yards off the Fuss Hollow Road, about halfway between Petersburg and Delina, on an old rocky road about 1000 yards west of the old Albright Schoolhouse. It was a frame house with weatherboard siding. It consisted of four rooms downstairs, one large room upstairs, and a front porch the length of the house. Downstairs there were living room/bedroom combination, bedroom, dining room and kitchen. It was heated by a wood fireplace in the living area and a wood stove in the kitchen for cooking meals. The barn was located a couple hundred yards to the east of the house, and their sons spent many happy hours playing hide-go-seek and having corn cob battles there.

The Albright schoolhouse was located a couple of hundred yards north of an old country store operated by Clabe Crabtree. After Albright school closed, Nannie Bell inherited $100 from her Grandfather Woodard and used the money to buy the old schoolhouse. It had to be converted into a house for the family to live in. The walls of the vestibule were torn away to make a front porch. The floors had been oiled to keep down dust, so all the flooring of the one large room was removed and turned over to get rid of the oily surface. Next they divided the large room into three rooms: living/bedroom, dining room, and kitchen. Later they added another bedroom and a back porch. This move was a big improvement, as now they were on the main road between Petersburg and Delina. They were also a lot closer to their water supply (the spring, which also was their refrigerator) and Clabe Crabtree's country store. As long as they lived in the house, you could see initials carved in the woodwork by students.

Willie farmed and worked in Otis Couch's grocery store in Petersburg. For a while he also sold Blair products -- polishes, cleaners, salves, pie fillings, liniment, etc. Willie served as a Lincoln County magistrate (county commissioner) for many years. He was noted for being an excellent storyteller.

In 1965 Willie and Nannie Bell sold their farm in Fuss Hollow and moved to Petersburg. A year later Willie suffered several strokes. He died April 28, 1975, at age 87. Nannie Bell died on June 2, 1986, shortly after her 81st birthday. Willie and Nannie Bell are buried at Talley Cemetery near Petersburg.
