Mrs. Ellen Courson Burkett, age 64 years, departed this life on the morning of Monday, July 8th. Mrs. Burkett was the daughter of Sara Douglas Courson and William S. Courson. On July 27th, 1880 she became the wife John "Jack" Burkett of Coffee County. The early years of their married life were spent in Broxton. Here they made friends that have lasted throughout the passing years. For the past twenty six years Mr. and Mrs. Burkett have made their home in Nicholls. As a member of the Nicholls Methodist church, civic leader, neighbor, wife and mother, Mrs. Burkett wielded an influence which was felt over her whole community. She was always interested in the welfare of every individual in the range of her acquaintance. For the past eleven years Mrs. Burkett was bed ridden from rheumatism. During this long period of invalidism she was always joyous, cheerful and beaming with enthusiasm over the topics of local interest. She refused to think upon the past. She always looked to the future and made the best of things. The funeral was conducted from the Nicholls Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. Rhodes of West Green, assisted by Rev. John Swain of Broxton, her former pastor. Both pastors spoke in beautiful eulogy of the life of the deceased. A number of friends in the audience also spoke briefly of her life and influence. Among these were Rev, J. L. Hillis, former pastor of the Nicholls Methodist church and Rev. C. P. Watson former pastor of the Nicholls Baptist church and many friends and neighbors.

The deceased is survived by her husband, her two daughters, Mrs. E. A. Meeks of Washington, D. C., Mrs. R. C. Moore of Nicholls, her son, John Burkett, Jr., of Ft. Screven, five granddaughters and three grandsons. She is survived by the following brothers and sisters, George Courson of Jasper, Fla., B. C. Courson of De Leon Springs, Fla., P. L., Tom and John Courson of Douglas, Mrs. Mary Hamadge of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Marshall Kight of Douglas, Mrs. Maggie Kight of Hazelhurst, Mrs. Dan Gaskins of Douglas, and Mrs. Angeline Thompson of Douglas. The funeral arrangements were in charge of the Douglas Undertaking Company of Douglas with interment in the family lot at the Meeks cemetery near Nicholls.
