W. W. CAMERON
William Wallace Cameron was born in Bath, N. Y., May 1, 1945 (sic) and passed from this earthly life June 5, 1924 at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 4 days, at Chester, Nebraska.
He enlisted at the age of 16 in the 10th New York Cavalry, from Plattsburg N. Y., October 3, 1861, was made orderly sargeant (sic) July 2, 1863. At the battle of Gettysburg he went back in the face of shell fire to the aid of a fallen comrade and was struck on the head by a shell and left on the field insensible; picked up rebels and taken prisoner to Richmond. He escaped with the comrad (sic) for whom he risked his life, but was recaptured. For nine months he was a prisoner at Belle Island and Libby prisons. In November 27, 1863, he was exchanged, and mustered out November 30, 1864, on expiration of his term of service. Three times he was wounded during his service.
He was married December 3, 1874 so that had he lived until next December, Mrs. Cameron and he would have been married for fifty years.
Mr. and Mrs. Cameron came from Mason City, Iowa, to eGeneva (sic), thence to Chester, where they have resided for the past thirty-three years as most highly resepcted (sic) citizens.
The deceased is survived by his widow and five children, viz: Will W. Cameron, New York; Nell (Mrs. Otho E. Lane), New Jersey; May (Mrs. Walter H. Kaley, Los Angeles, California; A. Don Cameron, Salem, Oregon; and Ariel F. Cameron, Hastings, Nebr.
In the passing of Mr. Cameron the nation loses a citizen who valiently (sic) served his day and generation in the great crisis; and. throughout his life he has sought to uphold the ideals of America. - Chester Herald.
