to William Gowen and Judey, his wife.

Occupations - Constable; Postman;
Town treasurer; Justice of the Peace;
Selectman for several years;
He was on a committee selected by Sanford
to oppose the 'Alien and Sedition' acts passed in 1798 by President John Adams.

On January 7, 1772 Stephen came to Sanford with his father.

In December of 1776, the Governor of Rhode Island solicited the aid of Massachusetts in defense of that state. Stephen Gowen [Private] served between May 19 to July 18, 1777 in Captain Abel Moulton's company of Colonel Jonathan Titcomb's regiment.

Stephen built a dam across the river and completed a grist-mill, running one set of stones. About three years later he and his sons, James and Walter erected a saw-mill below and adjoining; the capacity of this mill was such that 8 or 10 bushels of corn could
be ground per day.

Stephen died at his residence in Sanford.

They were the parents of thirteen children;
James [July 1775-August 1775],
Ruth, William, Timothy, Stephen, Polly, Sally, James, George, Mercy, John, Walter, Jane.
The family is recorded on the
1790 census at Sanford, York, Maine.

The Old Sturbridge Village Research Library (1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, MA) has a collection the Gowen Family Papers which consists of correspondence, legal documents, personal papers, business documents and receipts, account books and day books kept by either Stephen or Walter Gowen. Stephen Gowen was at various times the Treasurer and the Surveyor of Highways for the town of Sanford, Maine. These books and papers describe the daily transactions, including monies paid to town, amounts paid for foodstuffs and other goods, debits and credits to accounts. The legal papers refer to agreements regarding the Gowen mills, as well as land deeds and last wills/testaments. Papers such as receipts and notebooks tell of travel, newspaper subscriptions, insurance assessments, purchases, and weather.

Will of Stephen Gowen

I Stephen Gowen of Sanford in the County of York yeoman being desirous to make a distribution of my estate in a manner different form what the laws would make it declare the following to be my last Will and Testament.

First I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Mary Roberts Gowen the following articles of household furniture namely two Bureaus, two {house winch} Tables {two ----} Tables twelve wooden chairs, one chest, two Beds, two Bedframes with all the bedding thereunto belonging, one large Mirror and numerous small articles of which I have given her a memorandum with all the wearing apparel of my late wife. I also give to the said Mary the use of the two Chambers in the western end of my house to have the use and occupancy of the same so long as she shall remain unmarried also a home and privilege in common with and in the same manner as is provided hereafter for her two aunts, Polly and Sally.

Second I give and bequeath unto my two daughters Polly and Sally Gowen the use and occupancy of the two lower rooms in the western end of my house with a privilege in my cellar under the same, my Chaise and harness and all my household furniture which I have not disposed of I also give to the said Polly and Sally the use and improvement of one half acre of land at the South end of my garden with two rods of the garden adjoining the same with the privilege of taking apples from the orchard for their own use so long as they shall remain unmarried also a sufficient quantity of fire wood cut suitable for a fire in the room which they occupy, also one cow and two sheep to be kept for them so long as they shall need them also a privilege in common with Mary in the two chambers in the western end of the house.

Third I give to my grandson William Gowen son of my son William Gowen one dollar if called for in one year after my decease.

Fourth I give to my sons Timothy Gowen Stephen Gowen James Gowen George Gowen and John Gowen one dollar each to be paid in one year after my decease if called for.

Fifth I give to my daughters Ruth Garey Mercy Getchel and Jane Wilkinson one dollar each to be paid if called for in one year after my decease.

Sixth I give and devise to my son Walter Gowen his heirs and assigns all my land which I have not before disposed of with all my buildings and mills and my farming utensils and implements of husbandry together with all my remaining estate both real and personal he to pay out all the several legacies to my children as above directed and to receive all monies due me and pay all my just debts; reserving the piece of ground near my house which has been used a burying yard which its to be kept for a burying ground for my family and relations and it is my will that the said Walter cause a good and sufficient stone wall to be built around the said yard to be done under the directions and to the acceptance of my Executor and lastly I hereby appoint John Shaw Executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty sixth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty four.
