John and Martha married on 22 February 1818
at Shapleigh, York, Maine
They were parents of six children;
Roxanna, Mary Ann, Georgiana, Lorenzo D., Edwin L., Martha E.
The family is recorded on the 1850 census
at Farmington, Franklin, Maine.

His will was probated in Suffolk County, Massachusetts 6 February 1865. The provisions of his will were
"1. All my debts and expenses for his funeral were to be paid out of the debt due me from my son Edwin Lewis Gowen.
2. To my daughter Roxanna S. Smith of Bangor, Maine, I give the sum of one hundred dollars to be paid in one year after my decease out of the debt due me by my son Edwin Lewis Gowen.
3 . To Simon J Bradbury of said Bangor, husband of my daughter Mary Ann Bradbury I give the sum of one hundred twenty-five dollars to be paid out of the debt due me by my son Edwin Lewis Gowen.
4. To Dighton Corson, husband of my daughter Martha E. Corson, I give all the remaining debt due to me from him, saving and excepting only the sum given to said Bradbury by the next preceding item.
5. To Ellen Augusta Gowen and Eliza Jane Gowen minor children of my son Edwin Lewis Gowen, I give all the remaining personal effects and estate of which I may be possessed at the time of my decease including all indebtedness either by note, account or otherwise which may be due to me from their father, my said son Edwin, over and above what has been heretofore disposed of, by the 1st and 2nd items of this will and also including all other demands against other persons than said Corson. In case of the death of either without issue before arriving at the age of twenty one years the survivor to share the whole. Their said father (if he lives) is to have the use of said debt, and the share of each, till they respectively arrive at the age of twenty one years or are married when he shall pay over the sum due for each one's portion without interest to them respectively. And in case, both said children die without issue before arriving at the age of twenty one then the said indebtedness is to be wholly forgiven and released to my said son.
6. To my son Lorenzo D Gowen as well as the said daughters, I have heretofore made advances and former payments which in my opinion make them equal with what i have now given to the children of my son Edwin, which is the reason of my making no further devise or provision in this will in their favor.
7. I nominate my son Edwin Lewis Gowen to be the executor of this my will and I hereby request of the Judge of Probate that he require no bond or other security for the execution of said trust or any other trust under this will except his own personal bond without sureties.
In witness of all which I the said John Gowen have hereunto set my hand and seal at Bangor in the County of Penobscot and State of Maine on this tenth day of August Eighteen hundred sixty three.
Signed, sealed and declared by John Gowen as his last will and testament in our presence and we have at his request and his presence and in presence of each other hereunto set our names as witnesses on this tenth day of August A.D. 1863 Albert W Paine Nathan W Pease Orlando P Sawtelle of Bangor, Me.
