NAVY VETERAN A SUICIDE
Chase's only possession a knife
thirty years old
The only apparent asset of Ira B Chase, a veteran of the civil war,who committed suicide at the Smith & McNell's Hotel in Washington Street last night, was an old penknife, which he had carried since the war.
Chase who was about 68 years old, had been an inmate of Sailor's Snug Harbor for years. Whenever he came to the city to see his old shipmates he made his headquarters at the hotel. For the last two days he has been staying there.
When he went to his room last night manager Grant Waddell thought he looked dejected.
About 10 o'clock Mr Waddell, in passing the room, smelled gas. He burst in the door and found the old veteran lying dead on the bed, fully dressed except for his coat in the lapel of which was a Grand Army button.Papers in his pockets showed that Chase had enlisted in the Army from Pembroke Mass., in 1862,and was discharged on September 30,1865.They also showed that he served on the men - of - war Ohio,Proteus,Hendrik Hudson, and Princeton.
On the dresser in the room was a large piece of wrapping paper, on which was written in pencil a long list of names.Figures opposite the names footed up to $560.30. Whether they represented debts or possible assets was not clear.
*****
He is listed as a 27-year old laborer of Harwich, MA at the time of his enlistment into the United States Navy as a seaman. This occurred on February 24, 1862 in New Bedford, MA. Six months later on August 2, 1862, while serving on board the USS SAN JACINTO, he deserted.

It shows he was mustered into the 2nd Regiment Massachusetts Infantry on May 5, 1864, however, it appears he was never assigned to a company. His stay with this command was brief as he was transferred to the US Navy on or about June 5, 1864.

He remained in the US Navy for the remainder of the war. His discharge is dated September 30, 1865. He served abroad the following vessels:

USS OHIO
USS SAN JACINTO
USS OHIO
USS PROTEUS
USS HENDRICK HUDSON
USS PRINCETON
