William was the son of John and Belle (Dagonhart) Elder. He married Willie 'Blanche' (Burgess) and they had thirteen children: Buford Curtis, Rachel, Jack Fetus, Thomas Lynn, Alice Lynn, Annie Gay, Jayn Elizabeth, Constance Marie, David, Richard Burgess, Mary, Lena and John C.
