Donald F. Whatman, 90, of Chipmans Corners Road, Groton, N.Y., died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at the Groton Nursing Facility.
Born Nov. 30, 1919, in Ithaca, he was the son of the late Frank and Lily Breeds Whatman.
He graduated from Ithaca School in 1937, and was a lifelong resident of the Summerhill-Locke area where he served on the Locke Town Board for several years. He and his late wife, Lucille purchased a farm on Chipmans Corners Road in April 1946, and they along with their children operated the "Donnylu Farm" for many years. Their son, Richard, continued the operation after their retirement. Donald was an avid gardener and took great pride in his gladiolas and wood working. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his sons, Richard (Ruth) and Paul both of Groton; a son-in-law, Dennis King of Delevan; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Freda Hall of Homer, Ester Decker of Groton and Elbert (Virginia) Hall of Summerhill; and Virginia Hall of Moravia as well as nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Lucille; a daughter, Winifred King; a granddaughter, Kristin King; also a sister, Gladys Smith and brother, Fred Whatman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Ronald Miller officiating at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton. Spring interment will be in Groton Rural Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Groton Nursing Facility Activities Fund or to Hospicare, 172 E. King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
