William Phenis Osman, son of James and Betsy (Elizabeth Broom) Osman, was born near what is now Wabash Chapel in Effingham County, Illinois, June 27, 1857, and died December 25th, 1916. Aged 59 years 5 months and 28 days.
At the age of 21 years he married Malinda Alvis, to this union were born six children, Alva Everett Osman, Mrs Lottie Moreland, James J Osman, Eva E Osman, and Fay Osman, also a twin brother to his eldest son who died in infancy. His widow and five surviving children to day have the sympathy of this entire community in their sad bereavement.
Mr Osman united with the United Brethern church about 18 years ago, and remained a steadfast and enthusiastic member until death. His daily life has been that of a Christian Man. Honesty, integrity, sobriety and manliness, in the very broadest meanings of those terms were his common practices. His neighbors and entire acquaintenances are his friends.
He was a farmer. Born of farmer parents, grew to manhood on the farm, and he and mother earth have ever since been silent partners in producing his share in the progress of civilization, and to the sustenance of mankind.
How forcibly his life demonstrates to us that of all the elements, mother earth has never proved unfriendly to man. She spreads his path with flowers and his table with plenty, and returns with interest every good committed to her care. And when at last we are called upon to pass through the dark valley of the shadow of death, she once more receives him and covers his remains within her bosom. This teaches us that as from it we came so unto it we must shortly return.
Will Osman died on Christmas morning after a lingering illness of more than a year and a half of which at times seemed nearly unbearable but he put his trust in the one who doeth all things well. He had been a member of the U.B. church ever since its organization and, also a trustee of it for the same time. And in his death the Widow loses a devoted husband, the children a loving father the church an arduous supporter and the community a good neighbor. A good funeral discourse was delivered by Rev. J.E. Spencer of Vermillion, a former pastor assisted by Rev. O. Smith of Clarksburg. The interment was in the Wabash Cemetery. The Pall bearers were the other four trustees John Broom, Theodore Steele, F.H. Burch and G.W. Shumaker, and two other neighbors E.W. Durre and G. Stern.
