Son of John and Mary Allen Birdwell, founders of Enon Baptist Church, originally called Birdwell Springs Baptist Church.
Buried by his mother between two ancient cedar trees in the center of the cemetery. Some family notes state that he was the first burial at Enon, but a Mrs. Keys or Keyes was reportedly the first person buried in the cemetery.
Different researchers give his birth as varying dates between 1790 and 1800. Most show his birth date as Dec. 31, 1796, while some have 1793. To have enlisted in the War of 1812 and to have married in 1815, he was born no later than 1794-96.
He married Sarah Duncan in Madison County, Alabama, on September 8, 1815, and they moved to Tennessee. He died while on a visit to his parents' home in Alabama in 1832 (some accounts say 1831 and some say 1830-31).
According to Descendants of Henry Estill, Sarah Duncan had a sibling (name unknown) born Dec. 31, 1796 in Madison Co., KY (also "died 1796").
Margrett Ethlyn Rainey to Pearl Birdwell Garner, dated 18 August, 1976: "Moses and Sarah lived near Winchester, Tn. after they married. Moses' father moved to Lawrence Co., Al. near Moulton, Al. and when Moses visited him in 1832 he became ill and died there. He is buried at Enon Baptist Church Grave Yard. In 1832 Enon was called Birdwell Springs."
And further, on 8 September, 1976: "In 1853 Sarah (Duncan) Birdwell was living in Marion County, Tn. She was the widow of Moses Birdwell and was making the land claim for Moses who served in the War of 1812-1815. She said Moses enlisted or volunteered at Winchester, Tn. about 1812, serving during the Creek Indian War. She said they were married 1 September 1815 in Madison Co. Al. and that 30 years ago (1823) they lived in Franklin Co. Tn. Moses died at the home of his father, John Birdwell, at Moulton, Al. about 1832. Charles D. Birdwell wrote that he had been told by the brothers and sisters of Moses Birdwell that this was so. This was testified to by Levi and Sarah H. (Birdwell) Isbell (his wife) 31 January, 1854, Jackson Co. Al."

There was a list of individuals who petitioned US Congress for more time to pay for their land. The petition states that the land sales began on August 1809 and that they were inhabitants of the land. John Birdwell and Moses Birdwell are signers.

Moses Birdwell is a private in B Co., 16th regiment (Burrus'), under Captain Stephen Griffith's Company which was ordered into service for the defense of Madison Co. to repel an invasion of hostile Creek Indians. He earned $8 for one month's service.
1814, Sept. 28 - Mar. 27, 1815 - Lincoln Co., TN. Moses mustered into service for War of 1812 at Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN. This was Russell's Separate Battalion, Mounted Gunmen, Tennessee Volunteers. He was paid $122.46. Date of expiration of service or settlement was April 1, 1815. The "Company Muster Roll" says its dated June 5, 1815 at Murfreesboro which is presently in Rutherford Co., TN. Lincoln Co., TN and Madison Co., AL are next to each other.

The children of Moses and Sarah Duncan Birdwell were Charles Duncan Birdwell born c1816 and Amanda Minerva Birdwell born c1817 (who married John Clepper/Klepper). An article in the Mobile Register (Sept. 10, 1986) gave his birthdate above incorrectly as his marriage date and listed his children as Charles, Duncan, and Amanda M.
Charles D. Birdwell of Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee, sold a slave named Samuel for $500.00 to William Champion on 15 August 1843. Samuel is believed to have been one of the slaves his grandfather, John Birdwell, divided among his children and grandchildren in 1842.
