James Burr McLelland was born in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, the son of James McClellan(d) (McLelland) and Ann "Nancy" Harrison. His Mother, Ann was a daughter of Burr Harrison, a Revolutionary War soldier and major Plantation owner in Chester District, South Carolina. Burr Harrison's wife was Elizabeth Dargan and together they had 12 known children. On the 1880 census, James Burr stated his Father, James McClellan(d) was born in Scotland. Other sources say his Father was "of Charleston, SC". Details about his Father are still being researched.

James Burr McLelland, and his two (known) siblings, Jane Dorcas McLelland and George Kendrick Doughtery (GKD) McLelland lost both their Mother and Father when they were very young. It is believed by fellow researchers that these three small children were raised by, (we think), their Mother's Harrison family relatives, most likely in Richland, Fairfield or Chester Counties, South Carolina.

James Burr McLelland married his first cousin, Eliza Gibson Head, daughter of William Woodward Head and Susannah Gibson Harrison, (who was a sister to James Burr's Mother), on 4 July 1833, Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina. After marriage and one son born in Columbia, he and his small family moved to the Winston County, Mississippi area, and later to the Noxubee County, MS area. They resided in one of these two counties in Mississippi for nearly 30 years where they bore and raised the remainder of their eleven known children.

11. William "Willie" McLelland, b. August 1854, Macon, Noxubee County, MS; d. January 1855, Macon, Noxubee Co, MS - died as infant. Buried: Soule Chapel Cemetery, Noxubee County, Mississippi.

Staying in Macon, Noxubee County, MS even during the Civil War, he was a Captain of a Home Guard Regiment. His occupation was as a civil servant working in the courts as a clerk, a Justice of the Peace, an M.G. (Minister of the Gospel) marrying many people in the area.

After the War, by 1870 the family had moved to Bryan, Brazos County, Texas. Several of their children did not marry and are still found living at the family home in Bryan, Brazos County, TX in 1880. His wife, Eliza died 6 Dec 1879 and James Burr died a year later in Dec 1881. At the time of his death he was the Brazos County, Texas "County Treasurer". Other than a few land records found, he mainly seemed to live in the city areas, because of his occupation being one of a civil servant and working in the city government. It seems he lived a long, full and productive life. I would have liked to have known this man and more of his story. Rest in Peace.
