At the age of 16, he moved to Reedsburg with his parents.
In 1906 he moved to Madison where he was employed as a carpenter, later becoming a building contractor. In 1908 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Wienecke of Mt. Horeb, who passed away in 1913. This union was blessed with one child, Walter, who died in infancy.
On July 16, 1916 he was united in marriage to Miss Agnes Baumgarten of Loganville. This union was blessed with six children, two sons and four daughters.
In 1930 he moved to a farm near North Freedom, where he farmed until 1947 when he moved to the village of North Freedom, where he resided until he passed away after an illness of several months on June 4, 1955 at 7:00 o'clock in the morning at the age of 73 years, five months and four days.
During his lifetime he was engaged in many activities, including presidency of the Reedsburg Equity Shipping association, a member of the board of the Westfield Fire Insurance company, and agent for St. Paul's Mutual Insurance company, for many years.
Survivors include his wife, his mother and two sons, Norman and Marvin, of North Freedom, four daughters (Gertrude) Mrs. Merlyne Pieper of Rock Springs, (Arloween)
Mrs. Donald Oyan of Oak Park, Ill., and Althea and Sylvia, both of Madison and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Rock Springs St. John's Lutheran church. He was laid to rest in the North Freedom cemetery. Pallbearers were Ernest Koenig, Walter Lindloff, Walter Licht, Albert Licht, Clarence Voss and Lawrence Schuck.
