She was born in Madison on August 19, 1922, the daughter of Herman and Agnes (Baumgarten) Licht. She graduated from North Freedom High School, Sauk County Normal School, and the UW-Platteville. She taught many years in various Sauk County schools. Gertrude married Merlyne Pieper on September 25, 1948 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Springs where she was an active member for many years.
Survivors includes: her husband Merlyne Pieper, Rock Springs, 2 sons-Kenneth (Carie) Pieper, Rock Springs, Dennis (Lois) Pieper, Wisconsin Dells; 3 grandchildren-Corey, Christopher, and Kelly; 2 brothers-Norman Licht, Baraboo-Marvin (Ruth) Licht, North Freedom; 3 sisters-Arloween Oyan, Waunakee-Althea (Burdell) Trow, Brooklyn, WI., Sylvia (Leonard) King, Poynette; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
