William moved with his family to Woodburn, Oregon in 1930. He attended grade school at Hall School, a one room school just north of Woodburn until he finished the 8th grade and graduated from Woodburn High School in 1941.
Following high school he studied with a local baker then went to Baker School in Weiser, Idaho.
Following Pearl Harbor and training at the Electric Bakery, William enlisted May 20, 1943 and served in the U.S. Army as a baker supervising his bakery unit, 3019 QM Bakery Co., until his honorable discharge February 11, 1946. His discharge rank was Sergeant.
Following discharge he returned to Woodburn where he went to work for Woodburn Fertilizer and Seed Mill as a mechanic. He also worked on the family farm located just west of Woodburn on Route 1.
Bill was returning from a visit to his fiancé, Millie, when he was involved in a two-car collision at the junction of Highway 99E and the Wilsonville cutoff, being hit by a drunk driver. He died from his injuries April 28, 1955 at Salem General Hospital where he had been taken for treatment.
Besides his parents he left three brothers; Clarence of Sheridan, Kenneth of Baker and Roy of Woodburn. He also left four sisters, Agnes Fletcher of Tillamook, Grace Thompson and Doris Hughes of Seattle, WA, and Martha Thun of Cottage Grove.
Funeral services were held at Ringo-Cornwell Funeral Chapel Tuesday, May 3rd, 2:00 PM. Interment was in Belle Passi Cemetery.
