The finer qualities of a person's life are often brought into sharper focus as you see him exposed to adversity or suffering. Both age and illness tempered the stamina of a friend and loved one, yet he showed the beauty of the love, peace, and grace of God. Ira William Chenoweth quietly and confidently went to be with his Heavenly Father from the hospital room in Greensburg on April 9. He had seemed much younger than his 78 years, 5 months & 4 days, for he had retired from full-time farming only a year ago. Throughout life he had endeavored to faithfully serve Christ and the church, and to be a good example in the home and community.
He was born to William A and Louisa Sellens Chenoweth, Nov 5 1892 at Bunker Hill in Russell County, KS. In a news account of his first wedding, it is noted that Ira Chenoweth was "a young man of exceptional worth, high moral character and ability. He has spent all his life in Russell County and is known as a successful farmer." He was highly motivated, a hard worker, energetic yet neighborly, tender-hearted, and kind. He loved his family and took pride in the accomplishments of each member. He was united in marriage on Oct 7 1918 to Pearl Annetta Meharg at Bunker Hill. They moved to Haviland in 1924 where he has since resided. Following her death on Dec 7 1946 he was married to Gladys Card of Haviland on April 19 1948. Ira was a veteran of WW1 and took an active part in church and community affairs. He was a member of the Haviland Community Booster Club and the Friends Church. He had served on several committees, but had given several years of service to the funeral committee. He is survived by his companion Gladys and daughter Terri of the home; two sons Floyd and his wife Girtha of Johnson, and Dean and his wife Ella Fern of Haviland; two daughters, Kitty and her husband Ray Leffler of Ventura CA, and Audrey and her husband Charles Crouse of Garden City; one brother Hugh Chenoweth of Susank; his father-in-law Luther Card of Haviland; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Ira will be remembered as a thoughtful and generous person, and will be greatly missed by loved ones and friends.
