Oscar Archer, prominent North Plains rancher, was killed Saturday night in a wreck on Texas Highway 15, about 14 miles south of Spearman.

Archer, 37, was driving north in a 1955 Chevrolet coach about 6:30 p.m. when the accident took place. Robert James Ownbey, driving a 1949 Chevrolet truck, crossed the highway on Farm-to-Marker Road 281 and struck the right rear side of Archer's car, according to highway patrol reports.

The impact threw the death car head-over-heels at least one time and then it rolled off the highway, according to patrolman Bill Cosby. Archer was hurled out of the car and was found lying against a barbed wire fence.

He was rushed to Hansford County Hospital in Spearman where his condition was described as "very serious." He was pronounced dead at 9 p.m.

Ownbey, a 35-year-old farm owner, was driving with a small son. Neither suffered injuries, although the truck rolled over several times.

Cosby said there were no witnesses to the accident and that charges had not been filed.

Archer was owner of Claybrook Ranch north of Stinnett and had large land holdings in the Spearman area.

He is survived by his wife, Effie Pearl; a son, Bob; and daughter, Cathy.

Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Archer, and a brother Carl Archer, both of Spearman; and a brother, Dan Archer of Perryton.

Funeral services are pending.
