Son of Morgan Abbott and Sarah Johnson.

Married, 1st, Eliza Ann Lasley on December 23, 1863 in Randolph County, Indiana. In the 1880 Census, Nelson is identified as a widower, which means that it is likely that Eliza Ann Lasley Abbott died sometime after her marriage to Nelson in 1863 and before the 1880 Census. Nelson and Eliza were the parents of Idella "Della" (Abbott) McPhearson who was born in Randolph County, Indiana on May 15, 1872. Neither the date of death of Eliza Ann Lasley Abbott nor her final burial location is known. There is one discrepancy that has not been resolved. The 1870 Census make no mention of Eliza. Because Nelson and Eliza had married each other in 1863, then it would have been expected for Eliza to have been enumerated with Nelson in the 1870 Census, but she was not. Separated? Temporarily absent from the household?

Married, 2nd, Elizabeth Ellen Rittenhouse on February 2, 1881 in Howard County, Indiana and they were the parents of William Henry Abbott, Charles Abbott, Sarah Elnora Abbott Bragg, and Harvey Amos Abbott.
