Mary Catherine was the eldest of six children born to Christian George Pape and Mary Catherine Vonderhaar. She was the mother of twelve children. The first was Edythe Leonora, whose father was James Reeves. For many years it was believed that Edythe was Mary's sister. Upon her death, though, a birth certificate was found indicating that Edythe was actually her daughter. On 23 Feb 1923 she married David Piotrski and they had eleven children: Rosemary, twin stillborn boys, Robert, Lawrence, Ruth Louise, Marilyn, Dorothy, Francie, Ruth Marie and Margaret Jean. She never remarried after the death of her husband and she supported her family by taking in laundry and needlework. She enjoyed tending to the shrubs and flowers in her gardens and she was fond of her pet parakeets and canaries. She passed away peacefully while reading the morning paper in her favorite chair. The probable cause of death was a coronary thrombosis due to the heart disease that had plagued her the last years of her life. She was 78.

Mary Catherine was my grandmother. Her grandchildren all called her "Granny".
