Gustav was the son of Kandrad Michel and Agatha Wehele. It is believed that he immigrated to the United States about 1865/1866. Around the same time he married Sophia Honold and the family lived in Indiana and Tennessee before settling in Louisville, Kentucky, prior to 1882. Census records indicate that they had seven children, six of whom are known: Mary, Joseph, Annie, Sophia, Margaretha, and John Jacob. In the 1880's Gustav worked as a potter and molder for a crockery manufacturer. In the late 1880's and into the 1890's he worked for the Chess-Carley Oil Company and Standard Oil Company. The 1900 Census shows him working in a railroad shop. According to his death certificate he died of arteriosclerosis with a secondary cause of an infection of the bladder. His Courier-Journal obituary stated that the cause of death was bronchitis. Gustav died at his home, 1025 S. 17th Street, at the age of 76.
