"Joseph Croninger, pioneer of Kent County, was born in Portage Co., OH. Aug. 31, 1822. His parents, Joseph and Barbara Croninger, were natives of Westmoreland Co., PA. They removed to Cuyahoga Co., OH, when he was five years old, where he grew to manhood.
"In June 1847, he bought 40 acres on Sec. 35, Whitneyville, [Kent, MI]. Like his brother Michael, he was a great deer-hunter and exhibits a number of trophies of his work in the shape of horns, etc. He has an elkhorn which he found, measuring four feet and two inches in length and is 13 inches at the base.
"He was married Nov. 20, 1846, to Martha S., daughter of Michael and Mary Stewart, born in Euclid, Cuyahoga Co., OH, June 2, 1825. They have one child, John M[ills], born July 12, 1849. He [son John] was married May 27, 1876, to Eunice E[mma] Gardner, born near Waterford, Ont., March 1, 1856. They have one child, Matilda A., born May 11, 1879.
Mr. Croninger located on his present farm of 70 acres (Sec. 23) in April 1863."
